Breathe In, Breathe Out

Never in a hundred years would I have thought that I would be telling people if they want to relax from a stressful day at work or take their mind off things to try deep breathing techniques. Can you believe from all things, I discovered the calming and soothing effects of  focused breathing from an iPhone app I recently downloaded. The app is Health through Breath – Pranayama developed by Saagara.

To give you a simple description of what the app is about I would label it as a functional hourglass made to time your breathing performance. The app provides a more detailed description of what “Pranayama” is about and instructions on how you incorporate the breathing techniques with the apps’ functions. A few other provided features that you will be using are the Log book, to track your progress and maybe build a routine, and the Options to set up the app to your liking.

Even before you start your focused breathing session you will want to look at the Options because this is where you will select the things that you will be listening to and viewiing during your routine. There is first the music option with four different types of Zen like sounds that you can choose from. Next there is offered two different types of  Animation timers, you have the  Dial which looks like a dial counter or the Anatomy which is a 3d model of a man sitting in the lotus position. The last option is the Themes and there are also only two different choices to pick from I call them the red theme and the blue theme, all this option really does is change the background image.

When you begin your deep breathing period you will first be asked to choose the Length of exercise time up to 60 minutes, your Breathing pattern level, beginner to expert, the ratio for that level and then the Timing which to mention again are all explained in the provided instructions on the app. I recommend taking it easy and starting at the beginner level unless you are already a yoga guru because performing focused breathing techniques properly is not as easy as you might think.

What you will always see on the screen and be the same for every session you perform are the words Inhale and Exhale displayed at the top coinciding with the breathing animation, a ball and slider bar doing a similar thing and a timer at the bottom of the screen counting down. If you chose the Anatomy for the Animation option before beginning, a transparency slider will appear which will render the 3d character opaque or transparent depending on how you set it and when transparent you can see what happens to your organs when you breathing in and out, which is kind of neat.

I heard in Asia deep and focused breathing regimens are a commonly practiced exercise even to the point where one is sweating bullets. You don’t have to take it to this extreme but try using the Health through Breath – Pranayama app 15 -20 minutes a day to create a healthier lifestyle for yourself.
